The 2022 Nankai University-University of Glasgow Joint Ph.D. Program Overview

 

The University of Glasgow, founded in 1451, is the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world. Located in Scotland, the University of Glasgow is ranked 73^rd in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2022.

 

In 2019, the Nankai University-University of Glasgow Joint Ph.D. Program initiated enrollment. This program would be completed in English, and upon graduation, two Ph.D. degrees from both NKU and the University of Glasgow would be awarded to candidates who meet the requirements.

 

I. Entrance Requirements

1. Basic Requirement

1. Applicants should be Nankai University Ph.D. candidates of the class 2022

2. Applicants should be Nankai University Ph.D. student of the class 2021 with the approval from the supervisor

2. Minimum English Language Proficiency Level

1. IELTS Test (Academic)

1. For subjects related to language studies

• Unconditional offer: IELTS 7.0, no sub-test under 6.5

• Pre-sessional English courses: IELTS 6.5, no sub-test under 6.0

1. For subjects unrelated to language studies

• Unconditional offer: IELTS 6.5, no sub-test under 6.0

• Pre-sessional English courses: IELTS 6.0, no sub-test under 5.5 and writing at 6.0

1. Common Equivalent English Proficiency Qualifications (all subjects applied)

1. Unconditional offer:

Trinity London ISE ISE II at Distinction, Distinction in all sub-tests

• IBT TOEFL 90 (Reading 20, Listening 19, Speaking 19, Writing 23)

• Cambridge English Advanced CAE (C1) 176, no sub-test under 169

• Cambridge English Proficiency CPE (C2) 176, no sub-test under 169

• Pearson 60, no sub-test under 59

1. Pre-sessional English courses:

   Trinity London ISE ISE II at Pass, with Pass in all sub-tests

• IBT TOEFL 80 (Reading 19, Listening 17, Speaking 17, Writing 20)

• Cambridge English Advanced CAE (C1) Overall 170, no sub-test under 165

• Cambridge English Proficiency CPE (C2) Overall 170, no sub-test under 165

• Pearson 55, no sub-test under 55

3. A graduate degree recognized by both universities, along with an assessment of the research proposal, and an interview, etc.

 

II. Documents Required

1. A digital copy of the Application Form of Nankai University-University of Glasgow Joint Ph.D. Program (Attachment 1)

2. Evidence of English Proficiency Level

3. Academic Resume

4. Research Proposal (as in Attachment 2 Guidelines for writing PhD Proposals)

5. The digital copies of mentioned documents submitted to the relevant personnel by June 30th, 2022

 

III. Tuition and Fees

1. The tuition fee of the University of Glasgow differs from subjects. The 2021/22 fee of the Modern Languages and Cultures Ph.D. program was £19,350. All students should pay for the tuition fee while studying at the University of Glasgow unless indicated otherwise.

2. Students under the joint Ph.D. program should also pay for the tuition fee of Nankai University.

IV. Program Structure

1. Students should spend equal years in both Glasgow and NKU, following an arrangement of “2+2” or “1+2+1”. All students must be admitted through the official NKU postgraduate enrollment procedures approved by the Ministry of Education and complete their first two-year of study at Nankai University.

2. Each student under the joint Ph.D. program would be mentored by two English-speaking supervisors from both NKU and the University of Glasgow.
