In recent, Nankai University and the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom have signed a "2+2" Dual Doctoral Programme Agreement in Tourism Management. Professor Cao Xuetao, the President of Nankai University, and Professor Lu Gaoqing, the President and Vice-Chancellor of Surrey University, signed the cooperation agreement on behalf of the two universities.

The programme is designed to cultivate high-level and research-oriented outstanding talents with international vision and global awareness. The duration of this programme is between 3 to 4 years. Students will study for no less than 18 months at each university. They will be supervised by professors in both universities to complete a confirmation report and an English thesis. After completing the training plan and passing the examination under the joint guidance of the teachers of the two universities, writing a graduation thesis in English and passing the VIVA, they will get the graduation certificate from both universities. International travel and living expenses for students while in the UK are funded by the National Scholarship Council.

This is the third international cooperation training programme at the doctoral level after the dual doctoral programme with the University of Glasgow and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in the past three years, providing strong support for the implementation of the "4211 Excellent Nankai Action Plan" and the development of the "two-way internationalization".
