Teachers and students of the College of Tourism and Service Management carried out a special HIBL (hands-on inquiry based learning) activity in Changshu, Jiangsu

(Correspondent: Zhang Chengliang) During October 24 - 25, 18 teachers and students (including MTA and undergraduate students) from the College of Tourism and Service Management of Nankai University went to Changshu, Jiangsu for a special HIBL activity. Yang Dejin (associate professor and associate dean of the College of Tourism and Service Management) and Li Yiqing (student counselor) served as leading teachers.

Students participating in this HIBL activity were divided into six teams, carrying out investigations in Changshu Museum, Yushan Scenic Area, Shanghu Scenic Area, Shajiabang Scenic Area and Guli Town Scenic Area respectively on the following six subjects: parent-child HIBL, caring for women, leisure & health care, red tourism, hotel & resort and rural tourism. To improve the students’ ability to solve practical problems leveraging theoretical knowledge, a number of on-site teaching were designed for this HIBL activity, enabling students to conduct face to face communication with the front-line practitioners in Changshu tourism industry and panel discussion with staff from Changshu Culture, Sports, Broadcasting and Tourism Bureau. In particular, Shen Qin, deputy director of Changshu Culture, Sports, Broadcasting and Tourism Bureau, introduced key areas, industries and activities involved in the development of the tourism industry in Changshu.

To consolidate HIBL effects, Associate Professor Yang Dejin organized students for knowledge review, reflection and discussion every night. For example, they reviewed the characteristics of key areas (including Shajiabang and Guli Town) involved in the development of the tourism industry in Changshu, analyzed how to combine key industry with tourism development, and discussed how to better carry out such key activities as flower tour in spring, study tour in summer, harvest tour in autumn and Spring Festival atmosphere tour in winter.

At the end of this HIBL activity, students submitted a summary report based on their reflections during the activity. Next, students from the College of Tourism and Service Management will take part in “Changshu Culture & Tourism Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Creativity Competition in 2020”, and they will take advantage of this opportunity to, in combination with the actual needs of the tourism industry in Changshu, deeply participate in the innovation, entrepreneurship and creativity regarding the tourism industry in Changshu, promote the transformation and application of tourism innovation achievements, strengthen the ability to combine theory with practice, and strive to become a high-quality tourism industry leader in the future.
