In the afternoon of November 18, the salon themed by "Dispel the Clouds -- Virtual Reality in the Perspective of Tourist" was held in GENSBOX Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice Base of Nankai University. Hu Xiaolu, an alumnus enrolled 2001 into the Tourism Department of Nankai University, and also the general manager of Tianjin VRVISION Technology Co., Ltd., served as a guest in the alumni salon, and shared her life journey in the company of VR with Nankai teachers and students as well as alumni.
In 2005, HU Xiaolu, after the tenth anniversary since her graduation from the Tourism Department of Nankai University, returned to her alma mater, taking which as the opportunity, she contributed over 102 thousand of dollars to build a VR laboratory for the School of Tourism and Service Management. At first, she just intended to share VR technology she has mastered with her students in the form of several lectures, but she never thoughts that would “go further and further since the beginning”. To promote the students of the understanding on VR technology, Hu Xiaolu applied for the setup of a public elective course “manufacturing of three-dimensional virtual simulation scenario” in her alma mater and successfully made it. The course is designed to teach the methods for manufacturing VR scenarios to all the students of the university regardless of their grades or majors, which has successfully inspired the curiousity and enthusiasm of students during or after the class. In October 2017, under the strong support from the School of Tourism and Service Management, VR Association of Nankai University was formally established as the expansion and extension of VR course, since then, Hu Xiaolu, as the tutor of the association, has been endeavoring to lead students to implement scientific research innovation. "Setting up VR course and establishing VR Association in institutions of higher learning has never occurred before in Chinese institutions of higher learning. ", which means both challenge and responsibility for Hu Xiaolu. Through frequent classroom teaching and outdoor photographing, Hu Xiaolu and her students were trying to explore how to do well in course teaching, how to attract more students with interest and how to cultivate trans-disciplinary VR technology talents, thus they have cultivated strong friendship between the teacher and students while jointly exploring knowledge.
After the sharing meeting, participants were learned to wear VR equipment and experience a 360-degree immersion scenario under the support of members of VR Association. Students, attended the salon expressed that the activity enabled them to closely contact VR technology and thus have more intuitional understanding of disciplinary interaction and the integration of innovation. It was reported that Nankai Tourism Alumni Association will hold more alumni sharing meeting and salon activities in the future and will give sustainable play to the bridging role of alumni, thus provide a broader platform for alma mater’s serving alumni and alumni’s supporting alma mater.
